How Maine Coon Central Began

Welcome to Maine Coon Central – an educational resource created to help Maine Coon owners better understand this remarkable breed through real-life experience, careful research, and honest, practical guidance.

Maine Coons are not just large cats – they are intelligent, emotionally complex, slow-maturing companions with unique health, grooming, behavioural, and nutritional needs.

Unfortunately, much of the information available online is either generic, inaccurate, or not written by people who have actually lived with the breed. Maine Coon Central was created to change that.

My Maine Coon Journey

My name is Katrina Stewardson, founder of Maine Coon Central and a lifelong Maine Coon enthusiast with over 14 years of first-hand ownership experience.

My journey with the breed began with my first Maine Coon, Pippin, who introduced me to both the joys and challenges of owning this gentle giant breed. Through Pippin, I gained invaluable experience caring for a Maine Coon through adulthood and into senior life, including managing chronic health conditions and age-related mobility changes.

Toward’s the end of Pippin’s life, I welcomed Mika and Bali, two male Maine Coon brothers who continue to shape everything I write about today. Living with multiple Maine Coons across different life stages has given me long-term, real-world insight into how this breed develops physically, emotionally, and behaviourally over time.

Pippin has since passed away, but his legacy remains at the heart of Maine Coon Central and the compassionate, experience-based approach behind the site.

Built from 14 years of
real-life, maine coon ownership – not generic pet advice

Hands-On Maine Coon Experience

Over more than a decade of ownership, I have gained direct experience with many breed-specific topics, including:

  • Maine Coon growth and slow maturation (up to 4-5 years)
  • Large-breed nutrition requirements
  • Coat development, seasonal shedding, and grooming challenges
  • Behaviour traits unique to Maine Coons
  • Enrichment and indoor exercise needs
  • Training Maine Coons using positive reinforcement
  • Multi-cat household dynamics
  • Senior Maine Coon care

First-Hand Experience

I also have first-hand experience managing several Maine Coon-related health issues, including:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Bent tail syndrome
  • Arthritis and mobility decline
  • Digestive sensitivities
  • Long-term pain management support

This lived experience allows me to write from the perspective of someone who has navigated real veterinary decisions – not theory alone.

How Maine Coon Central Is Different

Maine Coon Central is not a generic pet website.

Every article is created using a combination of:

  • Real ownership experience with Maine Coons
  • Breed-specific research, not general cat advice
  • Peer-reviewed veterinary studies and academic sources
  • Current feline health and welfare guidelines
  • Practical insights learned from years of daily care

Where medical or health topics are discussed, content is supported by reputable veterinary references, and sources are clearly cited so readers can verify information themselves.

The goal is not to replace veterinary care – but to help owners ask better questions, understand their cat’s needs more clearly, and recognise when professional help is required.
