Badass Maine Coon Names: Strong, Cool & Powerful Ideas

ByKatrina Stewardson 06/09/202516/10/2026 Last Updated16/10/2026
Bali and Mika sat on their previous owners sofa, staring at the camera.

Maine Coons are one of those breeds that can carry a powerful name particularly well. Their huge size, rugged coat, tufted ears, and wild-looking appearance can make names such as Thor, Atlas, Ragnar, Valkyrie, Onyx, and Storm feel completely natural.

After living with Maine Coons for more than 14 years, though, I have also learned that a badass name does not have to mean an aggressive cat. My own Maine Coons have been called Pippin, Mika, and Bali, and all three have had very different personalities.

So if you want a strong, cool, or slightly intimidating name for your Maine Coon, choose one you genuinely enjoy saying rather than trying to force your cat into a stereotype.

Below are my favorite badass male and female Maine Coon names, including Viking and Norse names, mythological names, dark names, wild-looking names, and unusual, powerful names.

Quick Answer

Some of the best badass Maine Coon names are Ares, Atlas, Bear, Fenrir, Freya, Havoc, Loki, Magnus, Odin, Onyx, Phoenix, Ragnar, Raven, Rogue, Storm, Thor, Titan, and Valkyrie.

For a huge or imposing Maine Coon, try Atlas, Titan, Magnus, Thor or Hercules. For a mischievous cat, Loki, Havoc, Rogue or Rebel work particularly well. Dark-coated Maine Coons suit names such as Nyx, Onyx, Raven, Eclipse and Shadow.

A strong name should suit your individual cat, not imply that Maine Coons themselves are aggressive.

Male Maine Coon Names

Big male Maine Coons can carry strong names particularly well, but there is no reason every male needs to sound like a Norse warrior.

  • Bjorn
  • Bruno
  • Caesar
  • Cedar
  • Draco
  • Everest
  • Fenrir

If I had to narrow it down, my strongest male picks would be Atlas, Bear, Loki, Magnus, Moose, Odin, Orion, Ragnar, Titan, and Winston.

Female Maine Coon Names

Female Maine Coons can suit everything from elegant traditional names to powerful mythological ones.

Try:

  • Astrid
  • Athena
  • Ember
  • Freya
  • Juno
  • Nova
  • Nyx
  • Raven
  • Runa
  • Sable
  • Saga
  • Skadi
  • Storm
  • Tempest
  • Valkyrie

My favorites specifically for Maine Coons are Astrid, Ember, Freya, Juno, Nova, Nyx, Runa, Saga, Sable, and Valkyrie.

Viking And Norse Maine Coon Names

Viking and Norse names are a particularly good match for Maine Coons. Their large size, shaggy coats, tufted ears, and rugged appearance mean names such as Odin, Ragnar, Thor, Freya, and Valkyrie can feel surprisingly natural.

Some of my favorite Viking and Norse-inspired Maine Coon names are Astrid, Balder, Bjorn, Eir, Fenrir, Freya, Frigg, Heimdall, Leif, Loki, Njord, Odin, Ragnar, Rune, Runa, Saga, Sif, Skadi, Thor, Tyr, Ulf, and Valkyrie.

For a male Maine Coon, I particularly like Bjorn, Fenrir, Loki, Odin, Ragnar, Thor, Tyr, and Ulf. Odin and Ragnar have a strong, commanding feel, while Loki works especially well for a mischievous cat.

For a female Maine Coon, good choices include Astrid, Eir, Freya, Runa, Saga, Sif, Skadi, and Valkyrie. Freya and Astrid sound strong without being harsh, while Valkyrie and Skadi have a more dramatic feel.

My personal favorites are Freya, Odin, Ragnar, Rune, Saga, and Thor because they are distinctive without being overly complicated to pronounce or use every day.

Not Every Maine Coon Needs A Badass Name

My first Maine Coon was called Pippin, proving perfectly well that a giant cat does not need a giant-sounding name. Mika and Bali also kept the names they already had when we adopted them as adults. There was no reason to change names that were already familiar to them.

Personally, I think Moose, Pickle, Toast, Walter, Winston, and Yeti are difficult to beat on an enormous Maine Coon!

How To Choose A Badass Maine Coon Name

The Maine Coon’s size, rugged appearance, intelligence, and sociable personality offer plenty of inspiration.

The International Cat Association’s Maine Coon breed profile describes them as large, affectionate cats that often become involved in whatever their owners are doing. That means an imposing name like Atlas can work just as well as something completely ridiculous like Pickle.

When choosing a name:

  • Say it aloud. You may use it thousands of times.
  • Think about nicknames. Theodore will probably become Theo; Valkyrie may become Val.
  • Watch your cat for a few days. Personality can inspire a much better name than appearance alone.
  • Consider the coat. Color, ear tufts, enormous paws, and facial expression can all inspire.
  • Avoid unnecessarily complicated spelling. Unique does not have to mean difficult.
  • Don’t choose purely from stereotypes. An orange Maine Coon doesn’t need a fiery personality, and a black Maine Coon doesn’t need to be mysterious.

My Maine Coon Personality guide explores their temperament in more detail, while my Maine Coon Colors and Patterns guide is useful if you want a coat-inspired name.

Conclusion

There is no single perfect Maine Coon name.

Their huge size and rugged appearance make powerful names such as Atlas, Ragnar, Titan, Thor, and Valkyrie feel natural, while their playful personalities make Moose, Pickle, Toast, Winston, or Yeti equally appropriate.

After living with Pippin, Mika, and Bali, I would always choose a name that fits the individual cat rather than trying too hard to find something that simply sounds like a Maine Coon name. Spend a little time with your cat, say your favorite names aloud, and see which one keeps coming back to you. That is usually the name worth keeping.
