Maine Coon Vs Nebelung

When choosing between a Nebelung and a Maine Coon, it’s not just about looks – these breeds differ in origin, body structure, coat care, personalities, and compatibility with your lifestyle.

Here’s your go-to guide…

Origins And Ancestry

Nebelung

Originating in the 1980s in the United States by breeder Cora Cobb, the Nebelung was developed from domestic cats with long, silky blue coats resembling Russian Blues.

Recognised by TICA in 1987, its name means “creature of the mist” in German.

Bred selectively for mild temperament, elegance, and its signature silvery-blue fur, it’s still rare, with breeders mostly in the US, Canada, and parts of Europe.

Maine Coon

The Maine Coon is America’s oldest natural longhair breed, developed in the 1800s in snowy New England.

Lovingly called the “gentle giant,” it grew robust and thick-coated to survive harsh winters.

Despite urban legends about raccoon ancestry, they descended from Maine in the United States. Learn more about how they originated.

Size And Physical Appearance

Maine Coon (Gentle Giant)

Male Maine Coons weigh 18-21 lb, while females average 12-15 lb.

Their rectangular, robust physique features strong bones and thick limbs.

Distinctive traits include a square muzzle, prominent chin, tall tufted ears, large expressive eyes, bushy tail, and tufted paws.

Their size and features reflect their cold-weather origins.

Nebelung (Elegant Silhouette)

Nebelungs are more modest in size, typically 7–15 lb for any gender.

They have a sleek, semi-foreign body – muscular but graceful. Their heads are wedge-shaped with a refined chin; their ears are pointed and tufted.

Their coat is a luxurious silvery-blue double coat and tail, but they lack Maine Coon’s tufted paws and bushy tail.

Temperament And Personality

Nebelung cats are calm, intelligent, and selectively affectionate. They bond deeply with a few people, often appearing reserved or shy around strangers.

They prefer stability and routine, blooming in relaxed environments. Early socialization helps them trust new people.

By comparison the Maine Coon is known for their friendly, outgoing nature, and are affectionate with everyone – children, guests, and other animals.

These large cats thrive on interaction, often following humans around, playing fetch, and chirping. Their playful nature makes them excellent family pets.

Intelligence And Trainability

Both breeds are smart and benefit from mental stimulation.

Nebelungs respond well to gentle clicker training and food puzzles. They enjoy thoughtful challenges.

Maine Coons are highly trainable, adept at tricks, and love interactive toys. They’re also more likely to play fetch and stroll on harnesses.

Grooming And Maintenance Needs

The Nebelungs’ silky medium-long fur sheds minimally and rarely mats. Brushing two to three times per week removes dead hair and supports coat health.

Regular trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care complete their grooming.

Maine Coons have a longer and denser coat, and 2-3 brushing sessions weekly is essential to prevent mats and reduce shedding. Many Maine Coons enjoy the process and occasional baths help remove lose fur and debris, if necessary.

Extra attention during shedding season helps maintain coat condition.

Health And Lifespan

The Nebelung has a lifespan of 11-18 years and is generally healthy, though obesity can be a concern if not exercised.

By comparison the Maine Coon lives 1015 years. Their larger size predisposes them to hip dysplasia and spinal muscular atrophy, so it’s vital to choose a breeder who performs genetic health screening.

Cost And Availability

Nebelung are a rare breed with few registered breeders. Expect kitten prices from $1,000-$2,000 and possible waitlists.

Maine Coon cats are more widely bred with prices ranging from $1,000–$3,000 depending on lineage, rare color, and pedigree.

Which Is Right For You?

Choose a Nebelung if you:

  • Prefer a refined, serene feline companion
  • Want a loyal cat that bonds with a select few
  • Enjoy grooming, but not heavy brushing
  • Appreciate intelligent, gentle personalities

Choose a Maine Coon if you:

  • Desire a playful, social pet for family fun
  • Have an active household with kids or pets
  • Don’t mind regular grooming and shedding
  • Love cats with extroverted, sometimes dog-like behaviors
