Due to these genetic factors, Calico Maine Coons are predominantly female, with males being exceptionally rare.

Genetics

The Calico coloration in Maine Coons arises from the interaction of genes located on the X chromosomes.

Cats possess two sex chromosomes; females have two X chromosomes (XX), while males have one X and one Y chromosome (XY). The genes responsible for black and orange fur colors are located on the X chromosome.

For a cat to display both black and orange fur, it must have two X chromosomes, each carrying different color codes. This genetic arrangement allows female cats (XX) to exhibit the Calico pattern.

Males, having only one X chromosome, can typically be either black or orange but not both. However, in rare cases, a male cat may inherit an extra X chromosome (XXY), enabling the Calico coloration, though such males are often sterile. 

Pattern Variations

Calico Maine Coons display several distinct coat patterns:

1. Dense Calico

Characterized by large, solid patches of white, black, and orange fur distributed across the body.

The white is typically the dominant color, with black and orange patches providing a striking contrast.

2. Dilute Calico

Features a softer color palette, where black fur appears as gray or blue, and orange fur presents as cream. The overall effect is a muted, pastel-like appearance.

3. Calico Tabby (Caliby)

Combines the traditional Calico coloration with tabby stripes or spots. In this pattern, the black and orange patches exhibit distinct tabby markings, adding complexity to the coat’s appearance.

Why Most Calico’s Are Female

According to various cat specialists, approximately 99.9% of Calico cats are female!

This overwhelming female predominance is due to the genetic mechanisms governing fur coloration linked to the X chromosome.

Male Calico Maine Coons are exceedingly rare, occurring only when a genetic anomaly, such as Klinefelter syndrome (XXY), is present. These males are typically sterile and may face various health issues associated with their genetic condition.

Will A Calico Cat Bring You Luck?

In Japan, the “Maneki-neko” or “beckoning cat” figurine, often depicted with a Calico pattern, is believed to bring good fortune and prosperity to its owner.

Similarly, in the United States, Calico cats are sometimes referred to as “money cats,” reflecting the belief that they bring financial success.

While there is no evidence to prove calico cats truly bring good luck, it’s a fun and harmless superstition!

Are These Cats More Fiesty?!

Many people believe that calico Maine Coons have more attitude and personality than other Maine Coons with different patterns and colorations.

This superstition extends to all calico and tortoiseshell cats, and is often referred to as “fortitude“.

Many cat owners will agree that calico and tortoiseshell cats are feistier and more willful. However, it is most likely that this “tortitude” is caused by nurture rather than nature.
