Famous Maine Coon Cats

Not only is this breed famous for its enormous size, but cats of this breed are also known for their gentle demeanor and loving, sociable personalities.
Here are a few of the other key Maine Coon personality traits that might intrigue you.
Over the past few decades alone, the popularity of Maine Coons has skyrocketed as people share their beloved pets over various social media sites.
Maine Coons do not come cheap though, and you should expect one of these big cats to cost you anywhere between $400 and $3,000, or even more depending on their lineage and genetics.
As a result of their high price, Maine Coons are considered luxury pets, and owners of these cats are not afraid to pamper their feline like royalty!
If price is the only factor stopping you owning one of these giant beauties, make sure you read my guide ‘10 Places To Find Maine Coon Kittens For Free‘.

From record-breakers to actors to models, there are dozens of famous Maine Coon cats out there. So here is a list of the most famous Maine Coons found around the world:
Pebbles
Pebbles the Maine Coon became famous for her incredible skills as an actress.
She was cast to play the role of Mrs. Norris, a cat character in the famous Harry Potter franchise.
Pebbles was actually one of three cats that played Mrs. Norris throughout the series, but she truly played her part well as she strutted up and down the castle corridors!
Kefir
Kefir the giant Maine Coon cat from Russia has recently become a huge star for his enormous size.
Kefir is not even two years old yet, but he already weighs an astonishing 26.5 pounds!
Since Maine Coons do not actually reach their full size until they are between 3 and 5 years old, Kefir can be expected to grow quite a bit more still.
Kefir’s Instagram account, @kefirmainecoon, shows that, despite his size, Kefir is actually very gentle and cuddly.
You can find all sorts of videos and photos of this gentle giant snuggling with his owners or lounging around on his favorite beds.

The infographic below should also give you a clue as to just how big Kefir is:
Richie
Richie the Maine Coon took Instagram by storm with his beautiful yet unusual appearance.
He is a black smoke Maine Coon that was born with dark gray fur.
Over time, however, his long fur grew lighter, while his face grew darker. Now, Richie has a black face and paws, with long, silvery white fur.
He is often called the yeti cat or the lemur cat due to his magical appearance.
You can see Richie on his Instagram, @richi_the_mainecoon_ where his loving owners post countless photos and videos of Richie being curious and playful.
Rubble
The adorable Rubble became famous for being the oldest Maine Coon cat ever recorded. At one point, he was even the oldest living cat in the world!
Rubble’s owner, Michele, never had children, and spent all of her time and love giving Rubble the best life a cat could ask for.
Rubble lived for a staggering 31 years before passing peacefully in 2019.
Omar
One famous Maine Coon Instagram star is Omar, who can be found on the account @omar_mainecoon.
Omar has become famous not only for his luxurious orange fur and cuddly personality, but also his enormous size, as well.
Measuring a total of 3 feet and 11 inches, Omar is likely the longest cat alive today.
Omar is also unusual because his owners had a difficult time finding food he liked.
Thankfully, after a lot of trial and error, his Australian owners discovered that Omar loves eating kangaroo meat!
While this unusual diet is not the only reason Omar is so big, all that protein probably helped him reach full size.
Stewie
Stewie is the longest Maine Coon ever recorded, measuring a total length of 4 feet and .5 inches long!
At one point, he also held the record for longest tail.
Stewie’s unusual size was not the only reason he was so dearly beloved, though; he was also a trained therapy animal that touched countless lives.
Stewie sadly died in 2013 after battling cancer, but he left a huge mark on the world, and helped hundreds of people with his gentle personality.
Even though he is no longer the longest cat alive, he still holds the record for longest cat ever recorded.
Samson
Samson is a huge Maine Coon cat with 225,000 on his Instagram account, @catstradamus.
Samson weighs 28 pounds and measures a total of 4 feet long, making him one of the biggest Maine Coon cats alive today.
Sadly, Samson was diagnosed with hip dysplasia in 2016. This is a common disorder among Maine Coons that results in a damaged and irregular hip joint.
Thankfully, his owners are well informed about this Maine Coon health problem, and are able to give him the best care.
Despite his hip dysplasia, Samson is still happy and healthy, not to mention constantly swarmed by his adoring fans.

Ludo
Ludo once held the record for the longest cat in the world, measuring a total length of 46.6 inches long.
He had to relinquish his record to Barivel, however, another Maine Coon who measures just a fraction of an inch longer.
Ludo, however, weighed a total of 34 pounds, one of the heaviest weights ever recorded for a Maine Coon cat.
Below is an adorable picture of Ludo, the World’s longest cat at just 7-8 weeks old:

Cygnus
Cygnus was a beautiful Maine Coon with silvery white fur. His most famous feature, however, was his tail.
Measuring a total length of 17.58 inches, Cygnus held the record for having the longest cat tail in the whole world.
Cygnus lived happily with his Savanah brother, Arcturus, who held the record for tallest domestic cat. Tragically, however, the two record-breaking brothers died in a house fire in 2017.
Their owners were, of course, devastated by the news, but found peace in knowing the two passed together; since they were the best of friends, and could not bear to be parted from one another.
Iivana
Iivana is an adorable Maine Coon kitten that has become famous on TikTok and Instagram for his huge paws!
Iivana is a polydactyl Maine Coon, which means he has extra toes. This trait was once common among Maine Coons, but was eventually bred out by many breeders as it was considered undesirable.
Today, though, polydactyl cats are coming back into popularity, and Iivana is a great example of this.
This adorable orange cat has a total of twenty two toes, which means his paws look massive in comparison to the rest of his body.
Of course, Iivana is still young, and has plenty of time to grow into his paws. And who knows? Maybe Iivana will grow up to break some records of his own!
You can find Iivana at @iivana_theshipcat on both Instagram and TikTok!

Princess really lives up to her name, and even has her own fancy chaise where she loves to sleep!
She became especially famous when her owner uploaded an adorable video of Princess watching her favorite YouTube video, Baby Shark.
While the song has become a joke on the Internet for being repetitive and annoying, Princess seems to love the video, and happily sits down to watch the whole song whenever her owner puts it on.
If you want to see more of Princess, you can find her at @aym3igh on Instagram, and also on TikTok.

Luna and Tiara are both biological sisters, born in 2017.
A year later, however, their owners just could not get enough of their adorable Maine Coons, and they adopted a third named Lizzie.
The three sisters live in a small town in Norway, where their owners take them on walks for enrichment and some incredible photoshoots.
You can find all sorts of pictures of this lovely trio adventuring in the snow and exploring the wilderness.
Lotus
Perhaps the biggest Maine Coon Instagram star is Lotus, a huge, cream colored Maine Coon with a regal appearance and a warm personality.
He has become famous through his Instagram account, @lotus_the_mainecoon, which has nearly 350,000 followers.
At first glance, Lotus’s almond-shaped eyes and serious expression make him look royal and even a bit intimidating. After scrolling through his Instagram for a little while, though, you will soon find out that Lotus is a real goofball at heart.

What Is The Biggest Maine Coon Cat?
Maine Coons are famous for their large size.
If you find yourself skeptical at some of the pictures of enormous cats online, though, you might be asking yourself, are Maine Coons really that big?
Once you look at the Maine Coon size compared to normal cat dimensions, though, you will quickly see that Maine Coons are enormous.
The average domestic cat measures about 10 inches tall, 15 – 20 inches long, and weighs between 8 and 10 pounds.
Maine Coons, on the other hand, average about 8 – 16 inches tall, 19 – 40 inches long, and weigh between 8 – 25 pounds.
Of course, there are some Maine Coons that can exceed even these dimensions!
The largest Maine Coon ever recorded was Stewie, a beautiful silver cat from Nevada that measured 48.5 inches long, not including his tail.
Sadly, Stewie passed away in 2013, but he still holds the record for the longest Maine Coon.
The largest Maine Coon from around the world today goes to Barivel, a brown tabby cat from Italy. He measures a total length of 47.2 inches long.
Meanwhile, the biggest Maine Coon weight recorded goes to Ludo, who weighs an incredible 34 pounds and measures 46.6 inches long.
Originally, the Guinness Book of World Records recorded cats based on weight, but soon realized that this practice could encourage owners to overfeed their cats.
Since a cat’s length cannot be forced, it is deemed the most accurate way to record cats based on size (source 1).
Where To Buy Large Maine Coon Cats
If you are looking to buy a big Maine Coon cat, there is no guarantee your kitten will grow to the size you want. Even a kitten with huge parents could end up being average or even small in size.
Still, there are some breeders that claim to specialize in larger Maine Coons.
If you want to purchase a Maine Coon from a breeder, it is important to do your research first.
Since Maine Coons are so expensive, many people pass off mixed cats or even cats without a drop of Maine Coon blood as being pedigree.
Furthermore, some people may sell purebred Maine Coons, but raise cats in unhealthy conditions. This is why it is essential to purchase from a breeder that has been registered by a governing cat body, such as TICA or CFA.
There are catteries all over the world that specialize in breeding large Maine Coons, but here are three breeders to check out first (sources 1,2,3):
Megacoon
Megacoon Cattery is located in North Carolina, and has been established since 1995.
The cattery is registered by TICA, and specializes in producing large, healthy Maine Coons.
Graro
Graro Maine Coon Cattery is CFA registered and located in Long Island, New York.
Their largest female Maine Coon reached 18 pounds, while their largest male reached 33 pounds!
They also breed some polydactyl Maine Coons, as well, a trait that once fell out of fashion but is becoming more popular among Maine Coon fanciers today.
King Klaudr Coons
King Klaudr Coons Cattery is located in Colorado, and has been registered by TICA.
They specialize in giant European Maine Coons, and all of their studs and queens come from award-winning bloodlines
Why Are They Called Maine Coon Cats?
Maine Coon cats got their name through a combination of their location and popular myths.
This breed developed naturally in the United States, namely in the state of Maine.
They became popular for their ability to hunt mice, rats, and other pests, and soon became a favorite pet among farmers and sailors.
The Maine Coon’s name is an homage to the state they first developed in, as well as a common myth that stems from their tails.
Maine Coons have long, fluffy tails with distinctive rings around the base, which resemble raccoon tails.
Some people mistakenly believed that the Maine Coon was a cross between a cat and a raccoon, leading to the breed’s official name.

Conclusion

Some Maine Coons become famous for their unusual size, such as Barivel or Stewie, who have held records for being among the longest domestic cats in the world.
Meanwhile, other cats like Richie or Iivana have become famous for their appearance.
Even though many Maine Coons become famous for looking gorgeous, most people fall in love with this breed for their loving and gentle personalities, a trait you can find in every Maine Coon star on Instagram.
